Scalp Microneedling Before and After: What to Expect

Considering scalp microneedling for hair thinning? Here's a realistic guide to what happens before, during, and after treatment — including recovery, results timeline, and how to maximise outcomes.

Scalp microneedling is one of the most effective non-surgical treatments for hair thinning. If you're considering it, here's exactly what to expect from consultation through to results.

Before Treatment: Your Consultation

Every scalp treatment at AURA begins with a thorough assessment:

  • Scalp analysis: We examine your pattern of thinning, scalp condition, and hair density
  • Medical history: Understanding any underlying causes (hormonal, nutritional, stress-related)
  • Goal setting: Realistic expectations based on your specific situation
  • Treatment plan: Which tier is right for you (Maintenance, Infusion, or Renewal)

How to Prepare

  • Wash your hair the morning of treatment — arrive with a clean, product-free scalp
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications for 48 hours (check with your GP)
  • No alcohol for 24 hours before treatment
  • If you use minoxidil, stop 3 days before and resume 3 days after

During Treatment

The treatment itself takes 30-60 minutes depending on the area and tier:

  1. Cleansing: Your scalp is thoroughly cleansed with antiseptic solution
  2. Numbing (optional): Topical anaesthetic can be applied if preferred
  3. Microneedling: Using a medical-grade SkinPen, we create controlled micro-injuries across the thinning areas at optimal depth (1.0-1.5mm for scalp)
  4. Serum application: Growth factor serum or exosome solution is applied immediately, penetrating deep into the micro-channels
  5. LED therapy: Optional red light therapy to reduce inflammation and boost cellular recovery

Pain level: Most clients rate it 3-4 out of 10. The scalp is less sensitive than the face. You'll feel a scratching/vibrating sensation.

Immediately After Treatment

  • Mild redness and pinpoint bleeding — this is normal and expected
  • Your scalp may feel warm and tight, similar to mild sunburn
  • Small bumps may be visible for 24-48 hours

First 48 Hours

  • Don't wash your hair for 24 hours
  • Avoid swimming, saunas, and intense exercise for 48 hours
  • Don't apply any products except what we recommend
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase

Days 3-7

  • Resume normal washing with a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo
  • You may notice increased shedding — this is temporary and expected (old hairs making way for new growth)
  • Resume topical treatments as advised

Results Timeline

  • Month 1-2: Reduced shedding, improved scalp health, possible temporary shedding phase
  • Month 2-3: First signs of new vellus (fine) hair growth
  • Month 3-4: Vellus hairs begin to thicken, density improvement visible
  • Month 6: Significant improvement in hair density and coverage
  • Month 12: Full results with continued improvement if maintaining treatment

How to Maximise Your Results

  • Complete the full course (4-6 sessions) — consistency is key
  • Maintain a healthy diet rich in protein, iron, zinc, and biotin
  • Manage stress — cortisol directly impacts the hair growth cycle
  • Protect your scalp from sun — UV damage impairs healing and follicle function
  • Consider combination therapy — microneedling works synergistically with topical treatments
